Best Concealed Carry AIWB Holsters| Testing & Comparisons

As a 10-year military veteran and firearm enthusiast with extensive training and daily experience carrying concealed, a high-quality holster is one of the most important EDC (Everyday Carry) items I rely on. I’ve tested my fair share of holsters over the years and discovered first-hand how critical getting the right holster is for comfortable, safe, accessible, and concealed carry.

Recently, I’ve been experimenting with various AIWB-style holsters and wanted to share my reviews of what I found to be the top 6 AIWB holsters with a claw currently on the market, highlighting the pros and cons of each based on my testing and evaluations. The claw is an important feature on AIWB holsters as it helps push the grip of the pistol into the body for better concealment.

As background, I spent 8 years in the Marine Corps followed by 12 years in Army Special Operations with multiple combat deployments under my belt. I’ve had extensive training in firearms and CQC (Close Quarters Combat) and daily carry both in uniform and civilian clothing. Concealed carry is second nature and having tons of experience and training with firearms, I know exactly what I’m looking for in an effective AIWB holster with a claw.

Beyond my evaluations, I’ll also incorporate feedback from other experienced concealed carriers to provide additional perspectives. My reviews will be honest and unbiased, covering the most important factors I’ve found over the years for evaluating AIWB holsters.

I’ll cover the following 6 top-rated AIWB holster options:

  1. Black Jacket IWB Kydex Holster
  2. Alien Gear IWB Holster
  3. Alien Gear Appendix Holster
  4. Blackhawk Serpa Sporter Holster
  5. Boraii Kydex Holster With Claw
  6. Concealment Claw IWB Holster

I selected these specific models to review based on my background research into top-rated choices amongst communities of concealed carriers, my trusted network of military friends still serving actively today, various firearms forums I’m a member of, sponsored reviews from a few YouTube gun enthusiasts I follow, and general customer reviews on several of the top online gun accessory retailers.

What I looked for were holsters specifically tailored to AIWB carry, utilizing a claw for better concealment, high-quality durable construction, good fit, and retention, and of course the all-important comfort for all-day carry. Affordability was also taken into consideration.

First up – let’s get into these AIWB holster reviews!

Top 6 Best AIWB Holster with Claw

We are going to review the top AIWB holsters. These holsters are fantastic, and one of these would be ideal for your application. I tested these holsters firsthand, and I compiled my findings right here in this article!

Best Holster Claw 2024

Black Jacket IWB Kydex Holster

Black Jacket IWB Kydex Holster

Starting with the Black Jacket holster, is a slimmed down IWB (Inside the Waistband) holster constructed of .08” thick Kydex and designed specifically for AIWB positioning. It features an adjustable polymer “claw” that uses tension against your belt to leverage the grip of your pistol inwards against your body for improved concealment.

Some of the pros I appreciated on the Black Jacket holster:

  • The Kydex material provides rigidity for easy one-handed holstering while keeping a slim profile for concealment. The included claw also works well to leverage the grip of my pistol inwards.
  • It features adjustable retention via a screw so you can dial in just the right tension based on your preference and pistol model. Retention feels solid.
  • Edges are nicely smoothed for a comfortable carry. I wore this AIWB holster for 8+ hours with no issues.

Some cons worth noting:

  • Limited cant/ride height adjustment with only one slot. I prefer more flexibility here for fine-tuning.
  • Doesn’t have some of the features like a sweat guard or extra padding found on more expensive holsters. The minimalist design prioritizes concealment over absolute comfort.

For a budget Kydex AIWB holster option under $50, the Black Jacket gets high marks from me for its durable construction, smooth draw, and concealment-focused minimalist design. The adjustable claw helps leverage my pistol grip against my body effectively. It won’t have all the bells and whistles of more expensive designs but does deliver on quality and concealment.

Alien Gear IWB Holster

Alien Gear IWB Holster

Shifting gears, Alien Gear is a fairly popular holster manufacturer thanks to very affordable pricing. This model is their simple IWB design focused on versatility across multiple carry positions. It features a wide range of adjustments, a shell constructed from .08” polymer, and uses Alien Gear’s aptly named “Alien Claw” to help push the pistol grip inwards for better concealment.

Starting with some pros in the Alien Gear’s favor:

  • At around $35, it’s an extremely affordable holster constructed of durable, rigid polymer. Great option on a budget.
  • The shell holds its shape well for one-handed holstering while soft backing material helps cushion your pistol.
  • Fully adjustable can from -5 to 20 degrees plus adjustable ride height to dial this in for AIWB carry depending on your body shape and pistol. Retention can also be tightened or loosened to preference. Appreciate all that flexibility!

A couple of cons to be aware of:

  • While utilitarian in purpose, it’s not the prettiest or slimmest holster out there from an aesthetics standpoint. The focus is purely on function over form with Alien Gear.
  • Doesn’t utilize a “wing” design wrap around part of your belt like some other holsters. This may impact leverage from the claw slightly depending on your body type and positioning.

Ultimately, for the money, you just can’t beat the value here in my opinion. Alien Gear delivers on adjustable, versatile, durable holsters catering to all mainstream carry positions, including AIWB. Don’t expect exotic materials or a slim, curvy package – it’s about utility. But for around $35, you would be challenged to find a better all-around polymer holster.

Alien Gear Appendix Holster

Alien Gear Appendix Holster

Sticking with Alien Gear, they produce an appendix-specific rig to compare with the standard IWB model we just covered. It shares a lot of similarities in terms of materials and adjustment capabilities but is tailored specifically for AIWB positioning.

Starting with some pros over the standard IWB design:

  • Features a larger stabilizer wing that wraps around your belt with more surface area contact lending to better leverage from the claw pushing the grip inwards.
  • The larger wing also helps brace the holster for stability when drawing your pistol. Rock solid lockup with no wiggle.
  • Height, cant, and retention adjustment are nicely streamlined with simple Allen key screws compared to the standard model. Easier to fine-tune adjustments on the fly if needed.

Any cons compared to the standard IWB version?

  • The wing and appendix-optimized shape make this more of a dedicated AIWB holster only. Less versatile for other carry positions like strong-side hip carry. Retention feels slightly more biased towards a right-handed draw when worn on the left side in my experience.
  • The cost is a bit higher at around $65. Still very affordable compared to exotic Kydex or leather holsters but the increase is essentially just for the larger wing.

If you’re committed to AIWB carry, I think the extra $25-30 for Alien Gear’s appendix-specific holster is worth it over their standard IWB. You get enhanced stability and leverage on the claw for grip concealment – exactly what I want from an AIWB position. Alien Gear nails high-value, high-functioning holsters tailored for the budget-focused crowd.

Blackhawk Serpa Sporter Holster

Blackhawk Serpa Sporter Holster

Shifting gears from polymer rigs, Blackhawk offers an AIWB and Claw combo holster in the Serpa Sporter model constructed primarily of a durable carbon fiber composite along with moisture-wicking performance fabric back lining. It shares the iconic Serpa pistol retention release in addition to the claw for leverage on the grip.

Right away some pros I liked:

  • Very nice overall construction quality with molded retention and durable materials that still keep a streamlined, low-profile footprint. No unnecessary bulk.
  • The performance fabric lining does a noticeably better job pulling moisture away from the body compared to basic polymer backings. Great for active use in hot climates.
  • Mid-ride positioning places grip high enough for effective leverage from the claw while still allowing seating in vehicles without uncomfortable poking. Height is near perfect in my opinion.

In the con department:

  • While offering good flexibility, cant and ride height adjustments did require some hand tools for adjustment on the fly which is not always feasible if tweaking throughout the day. I prefer tool-less adjustment.
  • The flared magazine opening, while promoting faster reloads, does imprint more obviously through a cover garment. I have to wear slightly looser shirts to conceal this AIWB holster compared to more streamlined options.

Overall, the Blackhawk Serpa delivers very nicely as a durable, high-performance AIWB holster option. I can see why it has a loyal following among active duty law enforcement and the military. My nitpicks come down to fine-tuning adjustments requiring tools and the magazine opening flair pushing demonstrability a bit which impacts concealment slightly. But a solid choice nonetheless.

The Bottom Line

Having extensively tested all 6 holster options in my daily concealed carry rotation for several months now, my choice as the best AIWB holster ultimately comes down to the Alien Gear Appendix holster. For around $65 it offers an extremely versatile and configurable holster focused on appendix positioning.

The larger stabilizer wing grants excellent leverage on the claw to push the grip against the body for superior concealment compared to standalone claws relying purely on belt tension which may fall short depending on body type and clothing fit choices.

It may not be the absolute most durable or curvy offering on my list but for the money, it’s hard finding a more adjustable polymer rig purpose-built for appendix carry, effectively utilizing a claw, backed by Alien Gear’s warranty, and delivering reliable performance for years on end. That combination of value, quality, and appendix-specific design makes it my go-to recommendation for most concealed carriers.

Of course, budget, body type, pistol selection, clothing choices, and intended use all play into holster selection. I hope reviewing my top six AIWB holster picks based on extensive real-world experience provides a helpful starting point in finding your next, or first, concealed carry holster. Boraii Kydex Holster With Claw

Boraii Kydex Holster With Claw

Switching back to Kydex, Boraii offers a value-priced all-Kydex rig with a removable claw specifically built for AIWB carry. It checks a lot of boxes in terms of durable construction, adjustable retention, and utilization of a claw for grip concealment.

Starting with the pros:

  • Very affordable at around $35-40 making it among the least expensive Kydex options with a claw.
  • Minimalist, slimline design with adjustable retention accommodates a wide variety of pistols. I carried both Glock 19 and SIG P365 models effectively.
  • Nice range of cant adjustment from 0 to 15 degrees. Very versatile depending on your unique body shape and preferences.
  • A removable claw is convenient if you want to occasionally convert to IWB carry without a claw. Good built-in versatility.

And the cons:

  • Per my earlier note on minimalist design, the absent sweat guard does place more kydex against your body which can be uncomfortable long term, especially when active in hot weather. I tend to prefer some backing material or padding.
  • Cant adjustment, while flexible, does require a Phillips head screwdriver to tighten down and prevent slipping throughout the day. Out of the box the retention and cant adjustment both needed to be tightened considerably more than I’d prefer necessary for a production holster.

For the money, the Boraii delivers respectable quality and performance from my testing. The removable claw is a nice touch granting some convertibility down the road if desired. I’d mainly caution on the backing material lacking comfort over long hours for some body types, especially those receptive to irritation from direct Kydex contact. And do plan on cranking down the retention and cant adjustments out of the box.

Concealment Claw IWB Holster

Concealment Claw IWB Holster

As a high-quality, all-kydex option with claw, the Concealment Express IWB holster rounds out my reviews. Built from .08” boltaron material, it’s specifically formed with AIWB carry in mind. An overlook-style claw works to torque the grip of your pistol inwards against the body while a built-in sight track helps facilitate smooth draws.

Starting with some pros of this AIWB holster:

  • The boltaron plastic-metal hybrid Kydex alternative material offers enhanced durability and temperature resistance compared to standard Kydex. Maintains its shape exceptionally well over years of use based on my testing.
  • Nice added features like the sight track, sweat guard, and padded backer provide noticeable improvements in long-term comfort and draw efficiency. Attention to detail is clear.
  • Fully adjustable cant from 0-15 degrees and adjustable ride height help accommodate an exceptionally wide range of pistols and body types. Retention adjustment is also tool-less for quick tweaking as needed.

In the downside column:

  • It sits at a relatively high price point around $85. Significant jump from the budget Kydex options earlier in my recommendations. You are paying for quality here but it is an investment.
  • The claw offers slightly less leverage compared to offerings from Blackhawk and Alien Gear. This may require more precise holster positioning on the beltline to get ideal grip concealment based on your body type and typical clothing choices.

If you have the budget to invest and want an exceptionally durable, comfortable, adjustable Kydex rig purpose-built for AIWB with claw implementation, I believe the Concealment Express holster delivers fully on the premium price point. The boltaron material, sight track, adjustments, and padding do make prolonged concealment noticeably more bearable compared to barebones budget options. You just have to pony up to realize those benefits.
